Fourth Credit Math Courses

Page history last edited by Tim Brister 3 years, 10 months ago

This page (a work in progress) hosts some resources that might be useful in fourth credit math courses.  These resources are grouped by topic. Some resources on other class pages (Geometry, Algebra 2, etc.)  might be useful for some fourth credit topics with a little modification or by asking different questions. The units and standards associated with each of these resources is only a suggestion based on the opinion of the person(s) who created the link and is not intended to be a specific interpretation of the standards.

National Numeracy Network - http://www.nnn-us.org/Teaching-Resources -- (Great resource for Quantitative Literacy) The pedagogical approaches highlighted below can provide inspiration as you consider various approaches that will help you achieve your course goals. The resource collections are organized to provide a rich set of materials to draw from in constructing the specific set of learning experiences you want for your students. Finally, explore the more in-depth information and ideas available in special topics.

Be sure to check out Illustrative Mathematics, https://www.illustrativemathematics.org,  for the standards associated with each topic. This site is organized by standard.  Because of the number of tasks on that site, not all of the tasks are included here.  More tasks are being added to that site all the time.  It is a great resource for tasks that match the CCSSM.

Functions -- Trigonometric

  • Beautiful Trigonometry - https://youtu.be/snHKEpCv0Hk - a video illustrating how all the trig functions come from a circle.
  • F.TF.2, F.TF.3 & F.TF.5 – Spaghetti Sine Graphs - http://pchs.pcschools.us/woad-local/users/dhall/spaghetti_sine_graph.pdf  -  In this activity designed to help students visualize the relationship between the unit circle and the sine graph, students measure heights on the unit circle with spaghetti  to graph y=sin(x) on a coordinate plane
  • F.TF.5 -- Farris Wheel -http://map.mathshell.org/materials/lessons.php?taskid=427&subpage=concept - This lesson unit is intended to help you assess how well students can (a) Model a periodic situation, the height of a person on a Ferris wheel, using trigonometric functions and (b) Interpret the constants a, b, c in the formula h = a + b cos ct in terms of the physical situation, where h is the height of the person above the ground and t is the elapsed time.

  • F.TF.5 - Tangled Trig Graphs - http://nrich.maths.org/6481 - (Task) Students look at a tangled mess of trig graphs and have to answer questions about a certain graph. First, they will have to find the graph and then pick out the parts that are being asked for.
  • F.TF.8 - Trig Reps - http://nrich.maths.org/8107 - (Task) Students will look at three different ways to represent sine and cosine and then decide in a chart of problems which one they can prove will work.

Vectors

N-VM Numbers and Free Will - https://youtu.be/PFkZGpN4wmM -  A video from Numberphile (YouTube Chanel) in which mathematician Edward Frenkel explains vector space and vectors.

Statistics

Spurious Correlations -- http://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations -- Graphs of correlations that have occurred by chance.  Good for discussion of causation vs. correlation.
