Algebra 2 Resources

Page history last edited by Tim Brister 4 years, 10 months ago

This page contians links to Algebra 2 resources according to the units created by math specialists in Arkansas.  These are not meant to suggest the best way to organize information into units only one possible way.  The thinking behind this organization is that each unit is like a box of resources centered around a topic. The links below represent possible lessons that could be in the box, not a complete unit.  During the course of a unit, the students are to learn a given set of topics, but the teachers will not necessarily do every lesson or even do them in order.  The specific activity chosen or the next specific topic depends on what students do and say as they are working (planning based on formative assessment).  Themes such as solving equations or data analysis are woven into instruction throughout the year.  The units and standards associated with each of these resources is only a suggestion based on the opinion of the person(s) who created the link and is not intended to be a specific interpretation of the standards.  Many of the resources could be used in different or even in multiple units.

-----------Special thanks to participants in the summer 2012 Algebra 2 professional development at Harding University STEM Center for sharing links they have found.------------

Be sure to check out Illustrative Mathematics, https://www.illustrativemathematics.org,  for the standards taught in each unit, a site organized by math standards.  Since the site is continually adding tasks, not all of the tasks are listed below.

Function Families and Function SortsThese resources are designed to help build an understanding of function families and would be useful before going in-depth into the particular functions.

Unit 1 -  Polynomial, Rational, and Radical Relationships

Unit 2 - Trigonometric Functions

  • F.TF.2 & F.TF.5Spaghetti Sine Graphs - http://pchs.pcschools.us/woad-local/users/dhall/spaghetti_sine_graph.pdf  -  In this activity designed to help students visualize the relationship between the unit circle and the sine graph, students measure heights on the unit circle with spaghetti  to graph y=sin(x) on a coordinate plane
  •  Farris Wheel -http://map.mathshell.org/materials/lessons.php?taskid=427&subpage=concept - This lesson is intended to help you assess how well students can (a) Model a periodic situation, the height of a person on a Ferris wheel, using trigonometric functions and (b) Interpret the constants a, b, c in the formula h = a + b cos ct in terms of the physical situation, where h is the height of the person above the ground and t is the elapsed time.

  • F.TF.5 - Tangled Trig Graphs - http://nrich.maths.org/6481 - (Task) Students look at a tangled mess of trig graphs and have to answer questions about a graph. First, they will have to find the graph and then pick out the appropriate parts.
  • F.TF.8 - Trig Reps - http://nrich.maths.org/8107 - (Task) Students will look at three different ways to represent sine and cosine and then decide in a chart of problems which one they can prove will work.

Unit 3 - Modeling With Functions

Unit 4 - Inferences and Conclusions From Data

  • S.IC.1 & (S.ID.1) - Eruptions:  Old Faithful Geyser - http://www.nctm.org/rsmtasks/ - Click on the "Eruptions:  Old Faithful" task on this page of sample tasks from NCTM's Reasoning and Sense-Making series.  In this task, students analyze data and make predictions about eruptions of the geyser Old Faithful. They create a variety of graphical displays to discover trends in the data, and then they use those graphs to support their predictions.  This is one of the sample tasks from the series that can be purchased on the NCTM Reasoning and Sense Making Series page.
  • N.Q.1, N.Q.2, S.MD.5b (Could also be used in a 4th course) -Cash or Gas - http://www.nctm.org/rsmtasks/ - Click on the "Cash or Gas" task on this page of sample tasks from NCTM's Reasoning and Sense-Making series.  In this task, students evaluate two different prize options for a lottery.  This task is one of the samples from the series that can be purchased on the NCTM Reasoning and Sense Making Series page.
