High School Math Resources

Page history last edited by Tim Brister 4 years, 11 months ago

Sometimes it is hard to find good resources for high school math classes. This page contains resources I would either refer to for myself or use in my classes.

Be sure to check out my Math Resources page for sites containing resources at all levels.

Math Ready Course (SREB) -- http://www.sreb.org/page/1684/math_ready.html -- there are the materials for the course designed to be a forth credit math course that helps prepare students who are struggling in math with he mathematics they will need for college and career.

Illuminations -- http://illuminations.nctm.org/ -- Activities, Lessons, Web Links -- great place to find lessons ***

Mathematics Assessment Project (MARS tasks from Shell Center) -- http://map.mathshell.org/materials/ -- Contains links to lessons, sample assessments and other resources matched to CCSS. ***

Nrich -- http://nrich.maths.org/public/ -- Provides rich problems weekly on different levels of difficulty. Some of these might make good practice problems for assessments. Includes a link to search all problems by topic. Because it is a European site, some of the vocabulary is different and may need to either be explained or edited (ex: use of "gradient" instead of "slope". ***

Inquiry Maths -- http://www.inquirymaths.com/home -- s site containing a series of inquiry prompts for use in high school math classes.  Each prompt includes a page with background information and other information for teachers.  Site also includes inquiry resources and instructions for making your own prompts.

Dy/Dan Math Blog -- http://blog.mrmeyer.com/ -- Dan Myer's blog that contains many video clips he uses to engage students in mathematics. His goal is to get students to ask the question before giving them the tools, measurements, etc. needed to solve the problem. He includes links to the curricula he uses to teach Algebra and Geometry. Other great discussions and resources can be found on the site. ** (Would be *** if easier to search).

Get the Math -- http://www.thirteen.org/get-the-math/ -- about algebra in the real world. See how professionals use math in music, fashion, videogames, restaurants, basketball, and special effects. Then take on interactive challenges related to those careers.

David Pleacher's High School Math Resources -- http://pleacher.com/mp/mlessons/mlessons.html -- free lesson plans, games, ideas, puzzles and videos for high school math (Algebra, Geometry, Trug., Pre-calculus Statistics, Calculus)

NCTM High School Reasoning and Sense Making Series - http://www.nctm.org/rsmtasks/ - This NCTM series contains tasks that are designed to engage high school students in reasoning and sense making.  Sample tasks are available at this link.  The complete series is available for purchase.

Visual Patterns -- http://www.visualpatterns.org/ -- site that contains many different patterns that can be described mathematically.

Mathematics Vision Project -- http://www.mathematicsvisionproject.org/index.html -- Utah is putting together a collection of secondary curriculum materials to match Common Core.  This is the page where their completed work is held.

Algebra for All -- http://a4a.learnport.org/ -- This is a Ning for sharing lesson plans and ideas related to teaching algebra.  It includes a discussion board, lesson plans, documents, and more shared by teachers for teachers.

A Recursive Process Blog -- http://blog.recursiveprocess.com/ -- Another math blog with great problems, pictures, and resources for different high school math topics.

Yummy Math -- http://www.yummymath.com/ -- a blog designed to post real-life applications of mathematics in attempt to answer the question "When are we ever going to have to use this?"

The Math Place -- http://www.themathplace.org/ -- Animated PowerPoints, rich math problems, and student solutions. **

Continuous Everywhere but Differentiable Nowhere" Virtual Filing Cabinet -- http://samjshah.com/worksheets-projects/ -- Collection of resources for High school courses, Alg. 1 through Calculus

MIT Blossoms -- http://blossoms.mit.edu/ -- Video math and science lessons that can be searched by standards.

Stella's Stunners -- http://ohiorc.org/for/math/stella/setintro/ -- a collection of non-routine problems that could be used in classes ranging from Pre-Algebra to Calculus.

California Department of Education High School Modeling Task Force Resources -- http://caccssm.cmpso.org/high-school-modeling-task-force -- links to quite a few HS modeling tasks.

Combinatorics Website -- http://combinatorialthinking.com/ -- information and resources about combinatorics (mathematics of counting).
