Math Standards Resources

There are some "official" standards sites and other unofficial sites linked on this page.  Inclusion of resources on this page does not constitute endorsement by the editor of this site. You must determine for yourself if these resources truly match the standards.

ASCD Policy Points -- Debunking Myths About Common Core -- http://www.ascd.org/ASCD/pdf/siteASCD/publications/policypoints/PolicyPoints_Common_Core_State_Standards.pdf -- lists common myths circulating about CCSS and then tells the facts.

Tools Being Talked About -- http://collegeready.gatesfoundation.org/learning/tools-being-talked-about/?utm_content=bufferc47ab&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer -- a snapshot of tools being used by teachers, school systems, and school leaders. It’s organized by primary purpose, tool name, a short description and links directly to the tools’ site to learn more.

Choosing or Creating Curricular Materials:

  • Power Up What Works --  http://powerupwhatworks.org/page-puww/front-page -- contains evidence-based resources on teaching and developing curricular materials.
  •  Publishers' Criteria for the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (Updated April 2013) - These documents were put together by a team including authors of the CCSS-M.  It warn against a "cross-walking" approach to evaluating curriculum's match to the standards and recommends an approach that takes into account focus, coherence, and rigor -- the underlying ideas of the CCSS-M.  This can be a valuable tool for anyone purchasing or writing curricula.
  • Curriculum Analysis Tool (NCSM) -- http://www.mathedleadership.org/ccss/materials.html -- Tool for analyzing curriculum materials based on the Common Core Standards for Content, the Standards for Mathematical Practice, and overarching issues (equity, technology, etc.).  There are also manuals and descriptions of tools on this site.
  • Benchmarks for Choosing a Curriculum Attuned to the Standards for Mathematical Practice -- http://commoncoretools.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/practices-curriculum.pdf
  • Tri-state Quality Review Rubric and Rating Process (updated link 4/15/2013)- http://www.achieve.org/EQuIP - The Tri-State Collaborative (composed of educational leaders from Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island and facilitated by Achieve) has developed criterion-based rubrics and review processes to evaluate the quality of lessons and units intended to address the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and ELA/Literacy.  This is not as in-depth and specific as the Curriculum Analysis Tool linked above, but does contain some things that should be considered when choosing any instructional material.
